Honoring William Stafford: Poetry, Legacy, and Community

Calling all poetry lovers, wordsmiths, and those curious about the power of verse—save the date! On January 9, 2025, from 7:00 to 9:00 PM, the Friends of Hannon Library will host the 30th Annual William Stafford Poetry Celebration. This isn’t just another event, it’s a cherished tradition, rooted in Southern Oregon’s literary culture, celebrating one of Oregon’s most renowned poets.

This year’s celebration takes place at the Hannon Library Meese Room (#305) at Southern Oregon University in Ashland, Oregon. Best of all? It’s free and open to the public.

Why You Don’t Want to Miss This

What makes this year’s celebration extra special?

  1. Featured Poets Who Inspire
We’re thrilled to welcome Vince Wixon, a poet and scholar of Stafford’s life and works. Joining him are Margaret Loken, Peter Yeager, Barry Vitcov, and Dianne Oberhansly, with the evening’s program hosted by the talented poet Amy Miller. Each of these voices brings a unique perspective, ensuring the event is as varied as it is inspiring.
  2. Be a Part of the Action
During the second half, it’s your turn. Step up to the mic to share your favorite William Stafford poem or a related piece. Whether it’s “Traveling Through the Dark” or another of Stafford’s reflective works, this is your chance to connect with his words and with others who love them just as much.
  3. Celebrate a Poet for the ages
William Stafford (1914 – 1993) wasn’t just an Oregon treasure; he was a national literary icon. His accolades include the National Book Award for Traveling Through the Dark, serving as Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress (now Poet Laureate), and receiving the Western States Book Award for lifetime achievement. Stafford’s poems remind us of the beauty in simplicity and the richness of everyday life.
