The Importance of Story

It’s 10:30 in the morning right now, and I’ve already heard more stories than I can count on my hands and toes. Every time we as humans communicate with each other, story is somehow part of the process, whether it’s celebrity gossip over the water cooler, or hearing about your younger sibling’s day at school.

On Thursday, May 12 at 4 PM, world renowned literary artist, Tod Davies, is coming to the SOU Hannon Library, to talk about story, its impact on our culture, and why we need new ones now more than ever.

Davies’ open discussions are notoriously rowdy so come prepared for a treat. Just to name a few of the many titles Davies holds, she is the screenwriter for Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas,  the producer of Revengers Tragedy, the author of The History of Arcadia and Jam Today series, and the editorial director of Exterminating Angel Press.

This event is free and open to the public. This discussion is part of the Friends of Hannon Library event series, a yearlong collection of speakers presenting at Hannon Library to enlighten students and the Rogue Valley community. To learn more about the series click here.

Our 2016 Hannon Library Super Tuesday Primary has concluded with 174 votes! Here are the results:

The outcome of the poll was a win for Bernie Sanders (Dem) at 114 votes, followed by Hillary Clinton (Dem) at 23 votes and Donald Trump (Rep) at 12 votes.

Thank you everyone for your participation. The Hannon Library Government Information Department would like to encourage you to vote in the Oregon Primary on Tuesday, May 17, 2016 and in the General Election on Tuesday, November 8, 2016.

In honor of the 400th anniversary of the death of Shakespeare, SOU’s Hannon Library will host an afternoon of Shakespearean highlights, featuring Geoff Ridden.

Geoff Ridden is an actor, musician, and Shakespeare scholar. Ridden will discuss and perform music from Shakespeare’s plays. Following the presentation, Hannon Library’s Special Collections will offer a viewing of Shakespeare’s Second Folio of 1632 and Fourth Folio of 1685. Other treasures from the Margery Bailey Collection will be displayed, including sixteenth-century histories of the British Isles. Also on display will be a costume from an Oregon Shakespeare Festival production of As You Like It.

Renaissance Recorder Music

On April 5th at noon in the rotunda, the library will host a rendition of classical French songs played on Renaissance recorders. The musical group, Ensemble Fontegara, will play several French Renaissance dance movements as well as parts from Mellange de Chanson, a 1572-piece by LeRoy and Ballard.

Ensemble Fontegara is directed by Pat O’Scannell and includes the following performers: Stephen Bacon (bass), Karen Basin (alto), Luna Bitzer (alto/soprano), Tessa Brinkman (tenor), Pat O’Scannell (soprano/alto), and Kevin Woven (tenor).
