“Miriam brings to life this historically important woman in a way that inspires passion for social activism, an important reminder that there are causes worth giving ones life to.”

—Nancy Kilham, Ashland, OR

About Miriam Reed

Miriam Reed proudly earned her doctorate in Comparative Literature (UCLA 1980) and discovered how little she knew. Specifically, she had no idea who Elizabeth Cady Stanton was. Galvanized by her own ignorance, Miriam determined to save other women from such ignominy and launched her one-woman performances to educate and entertain, calling her solo plays “Women’s History 101“ and presenting such powerhouse women as Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Susan B. Anthony, Louisa May Alcott, Margaret Sanger, later looking at the women in the life of Oscar Wilde and examining differing views on abortion. With her savings, she wrote Margaret Sanger: Her Life in Her Words (Barricade Books, 2003) and was then asked to write and narrate “Clarence James Gamble: An Extraordinary Life” (DVD 2007). Later work: Japan 1908: The Adventure of Fourteen-Year-Old Clarence James Gamble (2013) and China 1908: Sidney D. Gamble & Brother Clarence Discover China (2017). Miriam lives with her Border Collie, Marnie, in Ashland, Oregon.

Art Quilt Exhibit

Poetry and art have been inextricably linked for as long as they have both been in existence—one illuminating the other and requiring the use of multiple senses, each breathing life into each other. Powerful combinations are created when the two art forms come together in thought-provoking ways.

To create the Blending Poetry & Cloth exhibit, artists were required to reference a piece of poetry, song, or quotation in creating their composition. Seventy SAQA Oregon members entered the competition, jurored by Patricia Clark, founder of Atelier 6000 Print Workshop in Bend, Oregon.

The resulting exhibit demonstrates not only the scope of artistic vision among Oregon SAQA members but also the consistent level of high achievement in the use of quilting as an art medium. The exhibit will be on display in Hannon Library’s Meese Room (LIB305) beginning April 4 through April 12.

a cappella singing ensemble

Hannon Library’s Music in the Library series will bring the sweet sound of music to the library with a free performance by Dulcet: A Cappella.

Tuesday, February 20
12:30-1 pm
Library Rotunda

Dulcet: A Cappella is Southern Oregon University’s premiere pop a cappella group. All members of the campus and general community are invited to stop by the library and check out this free music performance.

About Dulcet

Dulcet: A Cappella is comprised of 17 members from various majors on campus. Dulcet regularly competes each year at the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella. The ensemble has opened for the renowned British a cappella group Semi-Toned and performed with other SOU groups.

Dulcet was founded in the Fall of 2005 by freshmen Russell Kamp and Jesse Theissen and started with just nine singers, most of whom were brand new to a cappella music. Since then, the group has gone through a remarkable amount of growth and change, transforming into the accredited music ensemble. They have produced and been involved in benefit performances for both national causes and local organizations, and we continue to make appearances around Oregon’s Rogue Valley.

The performance is free to all.

This celebration is held every year to commemorate the birthday of the late Oregon Poet Laureate, William Stafford. A prolific writer, Stafford’s work is often associated with inspirations from nature, family, and the poet’s pacifist views as a conscientious objector during World War II.

Thurday, May 11, 2017
4-5 pm
Hannon Library, Meese Room
Southern Oregon University

Woody will discuss how drawing on nature and multicultural experiences of humanity and heritage can help form a creative will.

Elizabeth Woody is Oregon’s first Native American poet laureate. She is a member of the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs, of Yakama Nation descent, and is “born for” the Tódích’íinii (Bitter Water clan) of the Navajo Nation. Her paternal grandfather’s clan is Mą‘ii deeshgiizhinii (Coyote Pass – Jemez clan). She is a visual artist as well a published author of short fiction, essays, and poetry books. She received the American Book Award in 1990 and the William Stafford Memorial Award for Poetry, and was a finalist for the Oregon Book Awards in 1995.

“Her poems are like hands and hearts and also like lights: they grip and pulse and illuminate. Like the woman herself, the work is grand and modest and forceful. It will shake you, and move you deeply.” ~Bloomsbury Review
