The Friends of Hannon Library present local author Tod Davies as she discusses the impact of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein after 200 years.

Published two centuries ago, Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein is the iconic fantasy horror story. Even now the story keeps its hold on enthralled and terrified audiences everywhere.

“Frankenstein’s Monster is one of the most compelling and influential images in just about all aspects of our culture: scientific, literary, popular and more. Why is that? How did it happen that a nineteen year old girl suddenly found her voice, and in telling that voice’s story, wove an unforgettable tale retold countless times the world over? I’ll delve into this mystery, maybe coming up with an answer or two, as we look at the history of the story itself, its ensuing popularity, and the many different versions spawned by Mary Shelley’s original monstrous hit.” —Tod Davies

Tod Davies

Davies is the author of The History of Arcadia visionary fiction series: Snotty Saves the Day, Lily the Silent, The Lizard Princess, and the upcoming Report to Megalopolis or The Post-modern Prometheus (August 2018). She has long been fascinated by Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, and looks forward to sharing thoughts (and maybe a few surprises) about it in this event.

Local artist and author Betty LaDuke presents “Paintbrush Harvest”, with stories and paintings from the vibrant local food movement taking place in Southern Oregon.

Paintbrush Harvest will draw on LaDuke’s history, artwork, and her connection to small farms and the local food movement. This presentation is part of the 2016-17 speaker series sponsored by the Friends of Hannon Library, and is free and open to the public. About the Speaker:

Betty LaDuke is a renowned artist with strong ties to Southern Oregon University. Her artwork has been exhibited multiple times at Hannon Library and the Schneider Museum of Art. She has even taught as an art instructor at the university from 1964 to 1996.

LaDuke is also known for her engagement with social issues and cultural awareness. Her recent book, Bountiful Harvest: From Land to Table from White Cloud Press, takes inspiration from her personal experience with agriculture workers. In 2010, LaDuke was invited to spend time with the men and women who harvest the orchard, vineyards, and farms in Southern Oregon. She listened to their stories and was inspired to create vibrant paintings that capture the spirit of the fields and orchards.

The Ashland Literary Festival explores the many facets of literary arts, from traditional iad-participant-badge_300_253
literature to screenplay adaptations and comic books. This year’s event occurs on the inaugural Indie Author Day, observed nationwide by independent authors and libraries via live-streamed panel discussion. Other festival events include the Banned Books Read-Out, a Harry Potter-themed trivia competition, workshops on writing and publishing how-tos, and a variety of author readings.

Festival participants include authors, publishers, and literary experts from throughout the Pacific Northwest as well as SOU students, faculty authors, and university programs.
