FHL Speaker Series: Author Harry Fuller

Join the Friends of Hannon Library and author Harry Fuller for The Klamath Basin: Water and Waterfowl—

During the event, Harry will discuss his books and explain why the Klamath Basin is such a rich birding location. He will also discuss how the area came to be one of the first wildlife refuges.

Harry Fuller has lived in Oregon since 2007. Before retirement, he managed both TV and internet newsrooms in San Francisco and London. Fuller has written three natural history books, including Freeway Birding and Great Gray Owls in California, Oregon and Washington. He has been leading bird trips and teaching birding classes since the 1990s. Annual trips that Fuller leads include trips in Oregon and Washington for Klamath Bird Observatory, Road Scholar and Golden Gate Audubon.

Next year Oregon State University Press will publish a book of essays about Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, titled Edge of Awe.  It will include his essay on the Common Nighthawks to be seen there in abundance.  Fuller’s birding journal can be accessed online at atowhee.blog.

Hannon Library Celebrates Shakespeare’s Birthday and National Poetry Month

In honor of National Poetry Month, Poem in Your Pocket Day, and Shakespeare’s Birthday, which is celebrated on April 23, Hannon Library is currently presenting two displays that celebrate poetry and Shakespeare. The display on the first floor, closest to the reference desk, was curated from the library’s Reference collection and includes reference materials like The Definitive Shakespeare Companion: Overviews, Documents and Analysis and Who’s Who in 20th Century Poetry.

The first-floor display near the library’s Humanitarians for Justice, Nonviolence, and Peace art collection showcases new and notable books of poetry from Hannon Library’s collections as well as books that highlight Shakespeare’s sonnets. Featuring titles written by the 22nd Poet Laureate of the United States, Tracy K. Smith, including Wade in the Water and Life on Mars, this exhibit curates books from the library’s collections that are available to borrow.

While Shakespeare’s exact birthdate is unknown, come celebrate his life by delving into his Sonnets with titles like Ideas of Order: A Close Reading of Shakespeare’s Sonnets and Why Lyrics Last.

FHL Speaker Series: Oregon’s 9th Poet Laureate

Stafford is founding director of the Northwest Writing Institute at Lewis & Clark College. He is the author of a dozen books of poetry and prose, including The Muses Among Us: Eloquent Listening and Other Pleasures of the Writer’s Craft and 100 Tricks Every Boy Can Do: How My Brother Disappeared. Stafford has taught writing in dozens of schools and community centers as well as in Scotland, Italy, and Bhutan. In May 2018 he was named Oregon’s 9th Poet Laureate by Governor Kate Brown.

New Digital Collection Commemorates 50 Years of SOU’s Relationship with Guanajuato

A new collection, Universidad de Guanajuato, in Hannon Library’s Southern Oregon Digital Archives (SODA) traces SOU’s relationship with the University of Guanajuato, as well as the City of Ashland’s relationship with the Ciudad de Guanajuato. The collection contains historic documents, including signed agreements and photographs. More photographs and other items will be added over time.

Delegates from the University of Guanajuato and the City of Guanajuato will be on campus in April to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of their relationship of our Mexican counterparts with SOU and the City of Ashland.  Display cases on the first floor of Hannon Library exhibit materials from Special Collections & University Archives focusing on the sister-city relationship (Amigo Club) and the Amistad university exchange program.
